Synthetic diamonds 

There are a variety of factors that determine whether synthetic diamonds are better than natural stones. Colored diamonds are the most expensive and rarely available. 

A typical James Allen website produces zero results when looking for blue or red diamonds. A synthetic stone, however, will be more affordable and available in

various sizes and features. A synthetic diamond is graded in the same manner as a mined diamond, using the 4Cs, which are color, cut, clarity, and carat weight. 

Natural diamonds are billions of years old and are composed of the single element carbon. 

They are formed under extreme pressure and high temperature. Those conditions create the physical characteristics of diamonds such as optical quality, transparency, and hardness. 

The jewelry industry uses special terms for synthetic and imitation diamonds. These terms are usually accompanied by the words “man-made” or “imitated”. 

Unlike the diamonds mined from the earth, synthetic diamonds are grown in laboratories. High-pressure and temperature are used to produce these synthetic diamonds. 

The scientists then plant a minuscule diamond chip, called a “seed”, and then place carbon atoms over it. 

These atoms crystallize around the seed and form a rough diamond. In some ways, this process is similar to growing crystals in salt; the end result is a diamond rock that is similar to the one mined from the earth. 

Natural diamonds 

A recent report shows that mining for diamonds damages the planet. Natural diamonds are mined with the burning of fossil fuels, which can destroy a large portion of the earth. 

The environmental impact of mining diamonds is minimal compared to the carbon released when creating synthetic diamonds. 

Furthermore, there are increasing demands for diamonds, and the supply of mined diamonds is declining. Synthetic diamonds are the answer to the ever-growing gap in demand. 

Besides the cost, artificial diamonds have the advantage of being affordable. The price per carat of lab created diamonds has decreased by more than 50%.

Due to technological advancement, lab created diamonds are increasingly available, affordable, and diverse. 

This makes them a good choice for those with limited budgets. The cost per carat of artificial diamonds is lower than that of natural diamonds. 

Moreover, artificial diamonds can be made into more shapes, sizes, and colors, as compared to natural diamonds. 

Diamonds formed in the mantle of the earth. During intense pressure and temperatures, carbon formed diamonds. 

They are brought to the surface by volcanic activity. But their formation is a long process. The diamonds’ formation takes billions of years. 

Unlike lab-grown diamonds, they are subjected to the same pressures and temperatures as natural diamonds. Hence, they have the same chemical and physical properties as natural diamonds. 

High pressure high temperature (HPHT) diamonds 

In the United States, HPHT diamonds are recognized by the Gemological Institute of America, which is the leading authority on diamond grading. 

The GIA has a certification process that verifies whether a diamond was treated with HPHT, and considers this treatment a permanent process. 

GIA tests all diamonds, and discloses the treatment on its certificate. This way, buyers are better protected from being ripped off by unscrupulous jewelers. 

HPHT is the oldest technique, and is associated with yellowish coloured diamonds. However, the CVD method was the first to produce colourless diamonds at low cost. 

Although both methods can produce perfectly-cut diamonds, the only difference between them lies in the morphology of the finished product. 

Therefore, the only real difference between HPHT and CVD diamonds is the process that creates them.

The difference between HPHT and CVD diamonds is that HPHT diamonds do not show strain lines, and they are more transparent and translucent than CVD diamonds. 

The HPHT process does not create any blue color in the diamond, which is due to the presence of boron impurities. The best way to determine which type of diamond is HPHT-certified is to examine it under a microscope. 

The process that produces HPHT diamonds mimics the natural process by which diamonds grow in the Earth’s crust. 

A carbon seed is placed in a liquid containing 1.5 million PSI. Under these conditions, the carbon melts to create a diamond surrounding the seed. 

Once this is completed, the diamond is ready for wear. Because the HPHT process produces diamonds, it is also expensive and profitable. 

Moissanite 

If you are looking for a diamond, you might be wondering if Moissanite is a good alternative. 

Unlike natural diamonds, Moissanite is a lab grown stone that is almost colorless or nearly colorless. 

Moissanite exhibits a unique thermochromism, or response to heat. As a result, light reflected by this gem appears to be doubled. 

Although Moissanite is nearly colorless, it does not appear to have the same brightness or brilliance as diamonds. 

The discovery of Moissanite came about in 1893, when Henri Moussissan thought that crystals in a meteorite crater looked like diamonds. 

He studied them for several years before realizing they were silicon carbide. After completing his research, he patented the creation of single silicon carbide crystals and made the new material available to any jewelry company.

The production process of moissanite is much simpler than that of natural diamonds. The minerals in moissanite are thermally grown to simulate the conditions that occur in nature. The resulting gemstone is the highest quality of artificial diamonds available. The growth process takes up to three months. 

While this method is more expensive and time-consuming than diamonds, the results are well worth the extra money spent. 

Another advantage to moissanite is that it is affordable. The price of moissanite is determined by its size and the type of moissanite. 

Moissanites come in two grades: Premium and Super Premium. The Super Premium Moissanite is more colorless and less expensive than the former. 

For the price, a round 8mm moissanite can cost as little as $2,000! Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) diamonds 

A diamond is formed when the carbon atoms are arranged in a specific pattern. Graphite is the most stable carbon allotype, while diamond is the least stable. 

High pressure and temperature convert graphite to diamond. Developed in the 1950s, HPHT and CVD are two processes that use high pressure and high temperatures to form diamond. 

The CVD method uses a high-pressure chamber that is filled with a gas known as methane. The gas reacts perfectly with oxygen and hydrogen to form the diamond. 

The CVD process produces diamonds of nearly colorless color. In addition, it can create yellow, pink, and blue diamonds. These diamonds are much more affordable than naturally mined diamonds. 

But if you are looking for a fancy colored diamond, it’s not so easy to obtain. The CVD process allows you to find an affordable option for such a gem. 

CVD diamonds are made by imitating the diamond formation in interstellar gas clouds.

These diamonds are also chemically pure and do not have any impurities. While HPHT diamonds are often the purest, they still have chemical impurities. 

These diamonds are created under controlled temperature and pressure conditions, which is why the CVD process is so appealing. 

However, the advantages of this method outweigh the disadvantages. Aether diamonds
